1890's - 1940"s   The Move To Washington



Alexander Hecht opened the first Washington, D.C. store in 1896.  The opening day attraction was "shirt waists" which regularly sold for up t five dollars.  The sale price for opening day was sixty-nine cents.  That first morning, a crowed of over one hundred women waited impatiently for the doors to open and The Hecht Company was on its way.

In 1818, the family owned partnership was dissolved.  The Hecht Company was then formed with a majority of the stock remaining with the Hecht Family.















During the 1920's and 1930s, three stores opened under the Hecht Brothers name, one in downtown Baltimore, one in Easton, Maryland, and one in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Hecht Company also opened the most modern warehouse of its kind on New York Avenue in Washington, D.C.  in 1937.  Renowned for its streamline modern architecural design, teh historic trust landmark building is still in use today and is one of the most striking examples of Art Deco architecture in Washingon, D.C.
