1990's 

The Extraordinary Expansion

In January 1990, Hecht's acquired four Miller & Roads stores in the Richmond and Tidewater areas of Virginia.








In November 1991, the May Department Stores announced the consolidation of its Hecht's and Thalhimer's division.  The Merger brought the total number of Hecht's Stores to 42 with sales of $1.3 Billion.  This powerful new combination made Hecht's the largest division in May and created a regional department store chain covering the Mid-Atlantic States.



In August 1995, the May Department Stores purchased teh Woodward & Lothrop / John Wanamaker stores.


Hecht's wold acquire 13 of the John Wanamaker stores and one Woodward & Lothrop store in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  This brought Hecht's store count to 59.

In October 1995, Hecht's opened three additional stores in Pennsylvania - Two in Harrisburg and one in York.

In July 1996, the May Department Stores bought the Philadelphia department store chain Strawbridge & Clothier.  Hecht's would add thirteen stores in the Philadelphia area, operating under the name Strawbridge's.


Keeping an aggressive pace, Hecht's added three NEW stores in the fall of 1998.  Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach, Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News, and Dulles Town Center in Dulles.

In October 1999 the expansion continued with the opening of the new Chesapeake, Virginia store and in the same month the Hagerstown, Maryland store.  In November, a new 200,000 square foot Strawbridge's opened on the site of the original store at Moorestown Mall in Moorestown, New Jersey.
