New Beginnings...

On January 30, 2001 the May Department Stores Company announced the purchase of five Proffitt's Store locations in Nashville, Tennessee.  Folowing completion of the purchase in mid March, the stores re-opened as part of the Hecht's division.


In August 2001, Hecht's opened a store in Bowie, Maryland bringing the total number of Washington, D.C. area stores to 22.  Also in 2001, Hecht's added a Home Store in Montgomery Mall, in Bethesda, Maryland, and a new store at The Streets at Southport in South Durham, North Carolina.




Following the popular trend of open-air malls, in August 2002 Hecht's opened a store in Northeast Raleigh, North Carolina and in September 2003, a store at Short Pump Town Center in Richmond,  Virginia.

On March 17, 2004, Hecht's opened a store in Wilmington, North Carolina - Mayfaire Town Center and in October 2004, Hecht's opened a store at The Mall At green Hills in Nashvile, Tennessee.

On October 26, 2004 Hecht's completed its $15 million renovation project at Metro Center, located in Washington, DC.




In September 2005, Hecht's Opend a store at Northlake Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina.  This was the 13th Store in North Carolina, and brought the total number of Hecht's & Strawbridge's stores to 82.

On August 30, 2005, Federated Department Stores completed a merger with The May Department Stores Company.  In September 2006 the HECHT'S AND STRAWBRIDGES'S nameplates will change to Macy's.  The Hecht's store in Chevy Chase, Maryland will become a Bloomingdale's.
