Hecht's history begins in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1857 when Bavarian born immigrant Samuel Hecht opened a small shop selling furniture. In the next fifteen years he opened two more stores and brought four of his five sons into the family business.
In 1885, the first Hecht Brothers a full-service department store, opened in downtonw Baltimore.
During the 1880's the Hecht family increased it retailing dominance, opening several stores in Baltimore, New York and Washington, D.C. Those stores included Hecht's Greater Stores in Washington in 1896 and The Hub in Baltimore in 1897.

Moses Hecht, one of the four Hecht Brothers, is credited with guiding the company through its phenomental growth. Beginning as a salesman at the ripe age of 13, Moses was General Manager of The Hecht Brother's department store in Baltimore by his fifteenth birthday.

For many years after the Civil War, shopping ment consumers haggling with a salesman over the price. Under Moses Hecht's leadership, Hecht Brothers became the FIRST store in Baltimore to establish a one - price policy, with price tags placed on al merchandise.
Customers reacted favorably and other retailers soon followed suit.
